Looking to buy a UTV? Ask yourself the following questions to help narrow the search.

How Will I Use the UTV?

There are two main uses of side-by-sides: for work and for play. Depending on your intended use, you will want to focus on different features.

Recreational riding calls for:

  • Comfortable seating for those long trail rides.
  • Room to bring friends and family along.
  • Impressive speed and agility potential, which helps deliver adrenaline rushes.

Work projects call for:

  • Storage space to carry tools, materials, and debris.
  • High towing capacity.
  • Compatibility with your given projects, such as a narrow width for fitting through fence gates.

Where Will I Use the UTV?

Next, consider the terrain. Any side-by-side will be able to handle compact dirt trails. But certain terrains pose unique challenges that not all models can handle.

For example, rocky terrain calls for a UTV with high ground clearance while muddy terrain calls for a UTV with incredible traction. 

It's best to purchase a side-by-side that's designed with the given challenges in mind. It's possible to modify a UTV, such as buying a lift kit to improve the model's ground clearance to better cruise over obstacles. But it is an added expense and takes time! A better strategy is getting a side-by-side that's already suited to the given terrain.
