A UTV is built to accommodate multiple passengers and travel over rugged terrain. Many UTV owners love enjoying a thrilling trail ride with their children. While there are risks to bringing a child along, that is true of virtually any activity. With the right preparations, a safe and fun time can be enjoyed by all.

That is why the experts at Arizona Honda have put together this handy guide to child safety for UTV riders. Look Up the Laws

The first thing to do is check your state’s laws regarding age requirements for UTV passengers. In the case of most states, the minimum age to ride is 12 years old, but things may be different in your particular area. Some states have additional requirements beyond the minimum age. For example, it might be required that passengers be properly restrained with their backs against a seat while still being able to reach a handhold.

As an aside, in many states these laws won't apply on private land. However, remember that these regulations were created for the purpose of keeping young riders safe. The wise move would be to follow them no matter where you are riding.

Get Properly Fitting Safety Gear

All passengers need safety gear when riding in a side-by-side, and that includes children. However, ill-fitting gear won’t keep anyone safe, so find something in your child’s size. Besides helmets, make sure any children riding with you have sturdy footwear, full length outerwear, and gloves. You may want to add a neck collar to that list, as that will help guard against neck strain during the kinds of bumpy rides often experienced in a UTV.

Consider Upgrading Your UTV

If you are still concerned about your child’s safety when they are riding in your UTV, consider one of the many upgrades on the market that help reduce the risk of injury. A simple, common upgrade is to add handholds. They are both affordable and easy to attach to your roll cage.

Another popular choice is to switch out the standard 3-point harness for a 4 or 5-point harness. These harnesses are safer for child riders, particularly if you opt for a version with wide padded straps for extra comfort.

Know Your Child

This is the section that we are the least equipped to talk about because we obviously do not know your child. The good news is that you probably do. The simple fact is that not all kids are physically, mentally, or emotionally ready to follow the instructions necessary for a safe UTV ride. If you don’t think your child is ready, wait until they are more mature.

Know Your Skill Level

Once you know your child, get to know yourself. Even if your child is ready, you might not be, so practice and be sure you have the skills and experience necessary to complete the trip. Remember that the part of your four wheeler that you have the most control over is yourself.

Establish Rules for Safe UTV Riding

Finally, discuss the safety rules with your child before the ride. Make sure that they know the basics like “don't get into the UTV without a grown-up”, “keep hands and feet inside the vehicle at all times”, and “wear your safety gear and harness at all times”.
