The 1970s
Honda's first ATV was also the world's first all-terrain vehicle. Known as the ATC90, this three-wheeled powersports vehicle offered 7 horsepower with a dual range four speed gearbox with automatic clutch. The original intent was for recreational riding, but farmers saw its potential to improve their workday and began purchasing models for agricultural use.
The 1980s
All of the early ATVs sported a three-wheeled design, not just Honda ATVs. While this design was functional, it was also prone to stability, performance, and safety problems. Thus, in 1984 the first Honda four-wheeler emerged to help solve these issues.
The TRX200 ran off of a single-cylinder four-stroke engine with five-speed dual-range transmission with shaft drive and reverse. This impressive Honda quad captured the attention of customers and its impressive rider experience helped spell the end of the three-wheeled ATV.
During this decade, Honda was hard at work developing more four-wheelers. The company released the 1988 FourTrax® 300 and FourTrax® 300 4x4. These models focused on high-level performance and power potential. Over time, they even earned the title of the most versatile and most popular quads in history!
The 1990s
In 1995, the Foreman® 400 4x4 was unveiled as the strongest and most efficient Honda ATV to date. This beast of a machine helped workers in several industries get their work done easier, faster, and better.
Recreational riding also stayed a key part of Honda's quad line during these years. In 1997, the FourTrax Recon® offered the top performance in its class and left the competition behind in the dust.
The 2000s
By this point in company history, Honda had developed out its product line. There were high-performing recreational and utility four-wheelers to suit all types of customer needs and wants. But that wasn't enough for Honda! The innovative minds at the company kept focusing on improving and advancing the products, resulting in many exciting breakthroughs. The 329cc longitudinal-powered drive train in a new chassis, for example, helped take the quads to an even higher level of performance.
