ATV Sand Dune Riding Tips
You can purchase dune buggies and go-karts specifically designed for the sand, or you can use the ATV you already own! If you want to conquer the dunes on your ATV, here are a few tips to help you make the most of it. If you ever have any questions visit us at Arizona Honda in Snowflake, AZ. We also serve ATV enthusiasts from Show Low and Holbrook.
Use Momentum
Take it easy as you hit the sand dunes for the first time, but keep moving. Sand is much more unpredictable than other types of terrain, and sand dunes have looser sand than beaches do. If you slow down for too long, your wheels will start sinking! That’s why you must constantly think about your momentum. As you approach a large hill you already have enough experience to know that you need a good head of steam if you expect to make it all the way to the top. You should also plan your transitions ahead of time in the same way you approach a turn in a car or a motorcycle. Surfers and racers often speak of lines and grooves to describe the art of turning and you should think the same way as you ride on sand dunes.
How to Ride Dunes
Dunes are a great place to take your ATV on big jumps, but be sure to know where you’re landing. When you’re at the top of a slope you can try your hand at side sliding. Ride along the top of the hill and use your throttle and balance to stay on top. Your rear end will slide and fishtail all over the place and there’s no experience quite like it. And why not try a little carving? When you get to the top of a hill, make a sharp turn and let gravity carry you the rest of the way through the curve.
Be Safe!
Riding the dunes is an extreme activity, but trying to show off is how people get hurt. Ride at a safe speed and give other riders plenty of room. If you get scared on a steep hill, turn around. Wear the right safety gear and always ride with a buddy. Use common sense, and be sure to stay hydrated!
