Upgrade the Exhaust

It's amazing the benefits that come from making this one simple improvement.

Changing the motorcycle's exhaust can:

  • Help exhaust gases get expelled more efficiently, which helps the engine to "breathe" better.
  • Decrease the motorcycle's weight and, in turn, improve agility.
  • Increase horsepower and torque.
  • Quiet the motorcycle's sound.
  • Add to the motorcycle's aesthetic.

A common option is a 2-into-1 pipe. This usually results in the most usable power, particularly in the lower end of the powerband where many riders operate.

Upgrade the Air Take

Most motorcycles come from the factory with restrictions on the air intake system. If you lift these limitations, you can assist in combustion and boost the motorcycle's power and performance.

A highly affordable option is a free-flowing air filter. This usually starts at $50. Another common approach is an airbox removal kit. This usually starts at around $350.

Just keep in mind that these tweaks can increase the consumption of fuel. It may require adjustments to the carburetor or fuel injection accordingly.

Upgrade the Fuel Filters

Fuel filters help clean the fuel before it goes to the engine. Upgrading to a higher quality fuel filter can help keep the engine cleaner, which results in improved motorcycle performance.

It's also important to replace the filters regularly. They eventually get so clogged that they won't be as efficient, which can result in hurting the motorcycle's power and performance.

Choose Premium Gas

With premium gas, you get a higher octane. This is advantageous for improving motorcycle power and performance.

Decrease the Motorcycle's Weight

One free approach is to simply decrease the weight of your motorcycle. A lighter motorcycle will have improved performance, acceleration, and agility.

There are many ways to do this, such as:

  • Remove the passenger seat if you are riding alone.
  • Pack fewer items in your saddlebags.
  • Under-fill the gas tank on shorter rides where you don't need a full tank of gas.

Check the Tires

When tires are not inflated to the correct air pressure, it affects motorcycle performance. Take a minute before your ride to measure the tire air pressure, then adjust as needed.
